Gov. Amaechi: The History Maker- By Paschal Agbada &Wilson Uchendu
When Rt. Hon. Rotimi Chibuike
Amaechi assumed office as the Executive Governor of Rivers State
many did not believe in him. A lot of people had felt that after his
long drawn court battles to reclaim his mandate stolen by virtue of
the Peoples Democratic Party's (PDP) substitution of his candidature
after the primaries with Sir Celestine Omehia, he would be so
distracted to concentrate on his job. Somehow, he ended up
disappointing them.
First of all, his ability to turn
around the once troubled hot bed of the Niger Delta into a city
steeped in abject tranquility is what has confounded many a critic.
Militants before his emergence had held the Port Harcourt metropolis
by the jugular thereby making a mess of any security apparatus the
state could boast of. Infact, it was believed that his predecessor
compromised and hobnobbed with the militants by 'settling' them from
time to time.
This according to analysts was what
fueled and prospered the odium of militancy in the state as the
kingpins had enough cash to conscript even unwilling youths into
their fold. In short, militancy flourished in Rivers State. Within
this time, life became unpredictable and an uncertain enterprise.
One could never be sure when these
dare devil head hitters would strike. Borokiri area and most of the
waterfront were turned into battle grounds between the army as
represented by the JTF and the nefarious gun trotters.
However, Amaechi assumed office and
showed that a good government cannot do business with criminals as
he called them. Though the initial impression was that these were
freedom fighters on a cause to achieve equity within the Nigerian
Federation but no sooner had some of our politicians infiltrated
their rank and file than they noticed the sweetness of money from
these politicians. Suddenly the struggle that was for achieving
equality and justice from the Federal Government turned into
kidnapping and abduction of innocent citizens with other attendant
unhealthy developments. Anarchy thus loomed on the horizon.
Rt. Hon. Chibuike Amaechi rather
than toe the line of his predecessor by going for settlement with
the militants outrightly denounced them and branded them criminals.
Nevertheless, he promised them rehabilitation if they could
genuinely repent.
The Governor did not stop at
preaching. He proceeded to overhaul the police in the state. He
engineered the transfer of Commissioner Ogbaudu whose stay in the
state did not change things. Commissioner Bala Hassa replaced him.
Then with other governors in the Niger Delta the Joint Military Task
Force (JTF) was formed and thus went into the creeks, waterfronts
and other hide outs of the militants. Gradually residents of Port
Harcourt and other parts of the state began to sleep with their eyes
closed.
Security properly checked, Governor
Amaechi began to look into other spheres of the state’s needs and
lacks. Immediately he declared emergency in the education sector
which had become comatose. Subsequently his administration took
over the payment of salaries for primary school teachers while at
the same time rolled out a programme to build new schools. In this
bid, over 250 schools are at different stages of construction.
A lot of unprecedented
people-oriented projects have been embarked upon by the Amaechi led
administration. It would not be out of place to state that since the
military administration of Diette Spiff in the 70's which was
reputed as visionary, Amaechi administration has even proven to be
more visionary, service-driven, and run in such a manner as to put
the state in the pedestal for economic enhancement.
Several sectors of the economy such
as education, road construction and reconstruction, health care
delivery, poverty alleviation and youth empowerment, power and
energy, etc are being given the required attention.
For instance, more than 250
ultra-modern health centres are currently being constructed in all
the nooks and crannies of the state. Specialist hospitals and
regular government hospitals apart from being supplied with adequate
drugs and state-of-the art equipment, are also upgraded with the
right personnel so as to meet international standards. In the words
of the Hon. Commissioner for Health, Dr. Sampson Parker, “the
Amaechi administration is marvelously transforming the health sector
of the state to enviable heights. Salaries and emoluments of doctors
and other health workers are paid as and at when due. All we are
saying is for communities to jealously guard and protect government
health facilities situated in their localities. Such locations would
give the governor more impetus to build and equip more”, he said.
A retired civil servant from Degema
local Government Area, Isoku Dabo while beaming with endless smiles
told Beam Checks that the Governor is succeeding in health care
delivery.
Hear him, “what more can we expect
from Amaechi? He is gradually transforming the state. The health
centres being constructed and equipped would take care of minor
ailments which normally send poor people to their early graves. Look
at the roads, schools, drainages, infact, we have never had it so
good!”
Perhaps the most visible
turn-around of this administration arguably, remains the area of
road construction and reconstruction. Just in 2 years in office, no
Local Government Area of the state could deny this 'carrot' being
dangled by the amiable Governor. Over 300 roads gulping hundreds of
billions of naira are currently being constructed. Many are nearing
completion. With the roads come adequate drainages. Also the Rivers
State government is presently building a sophisticated and “New
York-like” flyover at Eleme junction round about. This alone has
gulped about $1.1 billion dollars.
A taxi driver in the Port Harcourt
metropolis, Emeka Chindah Amadi, told Beam Checks that the governor
is marvelously succeeding in the area of road construction. He said,
“there is no more cases of abandoned projects. The Governor is
infact God-sent. A lot of roads are either being constructed or
re-constructed. While he (the Governor) appears handling too many
projects especially roads is that his predecessors did virtually
nothing in that regard. So he is breaking new grounds and this
appears to be chocking him but given time and patience and judging
the dogged nature of the governor, he will succeed,” he told this
publication.
But in succeeding, the Governor and
his crew of think-tanks need to ward off numerous angles and prisms
of opposition which suffices at one time or the other. For instance
the recent demolition of waterfronts and shanties in the Port
Harcourt metropolis attracted all manners of chicaneries and
mischief.
Detractors described the demolition
as having ethnic inclinations but the ebullient Governor who would
not want to succumb to such blackmail remains neither unabashed nor
unruffled. Since the waterfronts habour all sorts of criminals,
street urchins and never do wells and above all curiously run a
government on its own, the governor had repeatedly stressed that it
is only the courts that could stop him from going ahead with the
demolition. Billions of naira as compensation are being paid to
landlords of these waterfronts.
Efforts of this government for
sometime now has been geared towards building a new city. Called
Greater Port Harcourt City, this city is being carved out of some
Local Governments of the state and would boast of modern and
adequate social amenities. The administrator of this new city, Dame
Aleruchi Cookey-Gam said that this project is very dear to this
administration. She called on all stakeholders to make relevant
inputs towards the new city “so as to make its realization sure”.
But all these projects would not
function optimally if power and energy are not assured. In this
wise, the Rivers State Government is investing heavily in
Independent Power Project (IPP). More than 300 mega watts is
expected to be added to the energy level of the state upon the
completion of the IPP. All these achievements would not have been
possible if prudent management of resources is thrown over board. It
is on record that this administration attaches great premium to
prudent fiscal management. This according to a director in the State
Ministry of Finance remains the “fulcrum and propeller of all these
monumental stories.
Page 9 Interview
Amaechi, A
Blessing To Rivers People-Ndukwe
Chief (Ms) Obiaruko Christy Ndukwe is a renowned patriot and
publisher. She is a major stakeholder in the present administration
in Rivers State and an unrepentant loyalist of the Rivers State
Governor, Rt. Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi. In this exclusive
interview with the Head, Niger Delta STANDARD Political Desk, WALTER
DURU, in her Abuja residence, she speaks on the Governor's two years
in office, Federal Government's post amnesty programme for Niger
Delta militants, among others.
EXCERPTS:
On Governor Amaechi's two years in
office well, thank you very much for your question and kind words.
If you say I am a major stakeholder in this government, you are
stating the obvious; because, we fought to ensure the enthronement
of justice and true democracy, which the government of Rt.
Honourable Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi represents. You know how the
government came about. The two years Governor Amaechi has spent in
office have been very eventful, in the sense that a lot of changes
and transformations have taken place in the state, unlike what it
used to be in the past, where governments embarked on projects that
one could not classify as mega projects. This government has the
vision to embark on mega projects, to befit the status of the state
and place it where it actually belongs in the 'comity of nation'.
Rivers State is one of the highest producers of oil and gas and
considered as the traditional headquarters of the South/South
region. That is why the government is going the extra mile in its
urban renewal programme. For two years, it has not been easy; a lot
of sectors needed to be touched.
In the education sector, previous
administrations tried their best also, but when Governor Amaechi
came in, he said we are not going to keep renovating schools. We
will build schools that will stand the test of time and compete
favourably with even the private institutions. You know, there is a
drift from the public schools to the private schools, and even the
common man on the street today will prefer to send his child to a
private school, no matter what their standards are. The government
has therefore decided to build schools at all levels that will stand
the test of time. The government has spent so much money and cannot
just leave the sector like that. The curriculum will change. There
will be training and retraining of teachers, in the new face of
education in the state. He declared a state of emergency in the
educational sector and that is what you are seeing, and there is no
nation in the world that will achieve any meaningful development
without education. With that at the back of his mind, he decided to
put in so much, and you can see that in two years, a lot have been
done.
In the infrastructural sector, you
can also see that there is massive road construction in the state.
There are deliberate efforts to link up the state capital with other
areas, as well as communities around. So, everywhere you go within
and around the state, there is road construction going on. Now, it
is not like what was going on in the past, where you had roads being
constructed without adequate provisions for drainage, because, the
topography of the state is such that, out of the twelve months in a
year, you have rainfall for a period of almost nine months. So, for
you to have good quality roads done, it means you are going to make
provisions for water drainage. That is why you see most of the
things you see in Port Harcourt; flooding and over flooding, because
these things were not properly taken care of in the past. There are
efforts to link up the various communities of the state and to
ensure that there is free flow of traffic in the state. Like you
know; because of constant influx of people into Port Harcourt,
population is high. People are coming into the city because the
economy of the state is vibrant and whatever you need could be
gotten there. With that in mind, you have to open the roads. That is
why you see most of the roads being dualised. Look at the Rumuola
road, Ada George has been awarded. NTA Road, Trans Amadi Road, and
in fact, almost all the roads are actually having not just a face
lift, but something different from what was obtainable in the past.
Ordinarily, because of the terrain, road construction in the area is
very expensive.
In the health sector, you will
agree with me that this administration has given very good attention
to the sector. We are not yet there, but we are really going there,
because he has laid the foundation for healthcare. Healthcare is
being made available for people and citizens of the state. It is now
affordable. It is now possible for both the poor and the middle
class to attain quality healthcare. That is why you have hospitals
being built and maintained in the various parts of the state. In
fact, three mega hospitals have already been built. Some others are
still being constructed. He is also recruiting medical personnel.
Doctors are being recruited; because, apart from the structures,
qualified professionals are required to manage them effectively, and
a lot of people are waiting and now, people are being employed, and
you know what it means. As for the health sector, just like most
other sectors, he has shown considerable interest in reviving it
from the old order. It might be too early to score him, but, I can
tell you that with what the people have seen, within the short
period of two years, irrespective of the fact that he did not come
in when other governors came in, you can see that he has set the
agenda for total transformation of Rivers State.
On the issue of shoddy execution of
projects by some local contractors in the state
Yes I am not going to hold brief
for the Commissioners in charge of some of these projects; but if
you recall, during the celebration of his one year in office, he
made the Commissioners responsible to answer, but there was
something he said, which I must remind you of. Some of the jobs you
see are kind of interventionist projects. The Road Maintenance
Agency was charged with the responsibility of making some of the
roads passable, pending when the projects are awarded and executed.
Once a contract is signed, it now behooves the contractor to move
into site. Again, because of the rains, depending on when the job
was awarded, a lot of contractors avoid the rains, in order not to
be messed up.
Again, one major problem we have is
that our people build indiscriminately. They even build on the
roads. They drop refuse even on the roads. They block drainages,
thereby causing flood. You are also talking of major projects that
may require compensation of some persons that their property may be
affected.
These things are all issues that
need to be determined and addressed. It takes time. Most of the
areas that appear shoddy may have been done by the Road Maintenance
Agency, just to enable people move freely, while the actual
construction commences. I am not ruling out the fact that some
contractors are performing dismally; but let me also tell you that
the Governor is one person that the moment he finds out that a job
is not properly done, he will not waste time in revoking that
contract. It is however not enough for people to scream that the
jobs are bad. They should first put into consideration, the above
issues.
On the performance of Local
Government Areas administration in the state
Let us even deal with the problem
from the top. The state government embarks on projects that are
supposed to be handled by the federal government. We saw it happen
in the previous administration and it is continuing again, and no
effort is being made to at least, pay 50% back to the state
government; now, a federal road, right at the centre of Port
Harcourt City, that is, Aba Road. Do you expect that the state
government will fold its hands and watch that road go bad just
because, it is a federal road? The people should realize that the
local government is a different tier of government, having some
level of autonomy. So, there is an extent to which even the state
governor can wield its big stick. It is the responsibility of the
State House of Assembly to check the actions and inactions of the
local government areas. If the state government allows the rural
roads, waiting for the council Chairmen to do them, they may never
be done, because, you have to first of all consider what is coming
to the local government? What is being statutorily taken away by way
of deduction? Then, you ask yourself, how much are they paying on
salaries alone? It is just that we are in a civilian administration
where people are employed for the purpose of achieving political'
points; so most of the local government Chairmen inherited huge
salary bills. When the deductions are made, salaries paid, they have
little or nothing to embark on for various projects. That is why the
state government is working tirelessly even beyond bounds, to ensure
that these things are done. It is something that requires a round
table discussion between the state, local and federal government and
not just the state government alone, because the local government
takes allocation, not from the state government, but from the
federal government.
However, on a general note,
sincerely, some of the local Council chairmen are not doing well.
That is the truth of the matter. Some are not doing well, because
stakeholders in the areas have also failed in their responsibility.
You voted them in, and it is also your responsibility to ask them to
render account of stewardship. Assuming they claim they are not
getting enough funds to execute projects, it is their responsibility
to explain to the people. That is the truth. Some are doing well,
some are not doing well. Some also have the burden of poor
allocation.
On the controversial demolition of
Waterfronts in the state
Anytime government decides to
embark on any major project, some people will decide to raise some
controversies. There are several political, cultural and business
interests. There are businessmen and there are politicians, so,
there must be a clash of interest, but the most important thing is
what the government intends to do. Is it for the good of the people?
In the long run, is it going to pay the people? There is no
government, apart from the days of in Military where you see a state
governor, embark on a project like this and it does not raise dust.
We are practicing democracy and you must expect it. I do not agree
with whoever says that the state government never consulted with the
people. In our own parlance, let us call it 'waterside'. We are
talking about shanties. Let people out there not think that it is
Waterfronts, as it is obtainable in some developed countries. When
you talk of government consulting residents, all government need to
do is to inform them that they want to do it, explaining why it
should be done. That was done. The question you must ask yourself
is: why has the government decided to demolish and transform these
shanties? Of course, you know where we are coming from. The issue of
security; which has been a major problem of this administration and
even previous administrations, including other states of the Niger
Delta region, the issue of security has hampered development in the
state. Expatriates are being kidnapped and chased out of the region.
When contracts are being awarded, the contractors are unable to
deliver within their time frame because of insecurity. Shanties over
the years have become hideouts for people who indulge in criminal
activities. The shootout you saw at Bundu waterside, I am sure, you
were not surprised, because, it is a vindication on the part of the
government that these places have become hideouts for criminal
elements. Despite the fact that the amnesty programme of the federal
government for militants in the region has just ended, people
decided to take arms against the government. Which means that the
Governor, Rotimi Amaechi was right when he said that these places
have constituted security threats to the state. It is also a known
fact that there are people who are doing genuine business there; but
you will agree with me that these shanties are not even habitable
for goats, you can imagine in a 21st Century Nigeria, that people
live in slums that do not have provision for toilets. No water. No
electricity. The houses are clustered. When it rains, flood takes
over the places and you see people hanging on rooftops until the
flood reduces. Apart from the security, what about the environmental
hazards? We are not even talking about the aesthetic view. We are
not even talking about the tourism potentials that will eventually
yield revenue. Not even job opportunities. There are several
interests; but the most important is: why government ever went in
there. I am sure, because of relative peace brought by Rotimi's
government, people have forgotten what it used to be. During Sir
Celestine Omehia's regime, people raised their hands while crossing
police check points. There was curfew and economic activities were
paralyzed and people lived in fear. The truth is that we easily
forget and that is why some people still want Waterfronts to remain.
On the issue of resettling the
Waterfronts dwellers
Yes! If you talk about
resettlement, you must first ask of what caused the shooting.
Enumerators went to actually ascertain the number of persons living
there, property involved, among others and were chased away. So,
even if you go there today, they will still chase you away. So, how
do you know the population, the figures, to enable you plan
properly? That is the truth.
We have also heard the government
say that some landlords and house owners there have received as much
as twenty five million (N25m) from the government. Twenty five
million is enough for you to acquire one plot of land somewhere and
develop it, rather than to live in shanties. What other alternative
resettlement measures are we talking about? Have you ever seen where
a state government built houses for the poor and gave them keys to
go and live freely? Let me ask you; how did they even go to those
Waterfronts to stay? The natives already have their communities well
developed. The average riverine man is a proud man and likes good
life. They would not want to come and live there. Now, they were
allowed to stay there on a makeshift ground and they suddenly
allowed it to be hijacked by criminal elements. It is just like what
our Lord Jesus Christ did during the cleansing of the Temple. He
said, my father's house is not to be a 'den of robbers', but should
be a house of prayer. What did he do? He wielded the big stick. You
remember the story, as recorded in the Bible. Did he ask them to go
to another place? So, what is wrong with what Amaechi has done if
he is only following the foot steps of our Lord Jesus Christ?
On the later support of the
governor for amnesty to Niger Delta militants
Let me tell you, the governor was
never against amnesty. All he was trying to let the world know was
that there were criminals involved. It was not all of them that were
struggling for the Niger Delta. Criminals were even more than
genuine freedom fighters. The governor only insisted that the
criminals be made to face the wrath of the law. You can see that
shortly after the amnesty programme, there were still shootings,
which means that they still have the arms. That means that the law
should take its full course.
However, to a large extent, the
amnesty programme was a success. Nobody expected 100 percent
success. The success and relative peace in the region is a fragile
one. The federal government must be sincere in addressing the issues
that actually led to the arms struggle. Even if it is criminality,
it is because there is unemployment and poverty. There are teeming
youths out there, having no source of livelihood. The cost of living
has risen astronomically. For those, who say they are fighting for
the Niger Delta, the federal government must move in fast to develop
the region. We are tired of hearing of a master plan. We are tired
of hearing of technical committees. Let us begin to implement these
plans. Federal government must be sincere if not, I can assure you,
that the whole thing will be messed up at the end of the day.
Reacting to the speech of the
Speaker of the House of Representatives, Dimeji Bankole, blaming
Niger Delta leaders for the woes of the region.
I think he was talking from an
uniformed point of view. The Speaker who sits on top of a Northern
dominated House is uninformed. Were you expecting him to say
anything better? Having known that the leaders of the region are
responsible for its problems, since inception of office as Speaker,
how many bills have been passed to ensure a genuine development of
the region? As I talk with you today, the Niger Delta Ministry and
the NDDC budgets brought together are not even up to what NDDC used
to receive. How has he used his position to address it? You must be
sincere. You must speak from an informed view.
On the country's perennial power
and energy crises
The truth is that our refineries
have become a conduit pipe for fraud. The contracts for the
importation of fuel are handled by key stakeholders in government.
They make more money and want the refineries to remain grounded. I
give you another instance. The power crises, why can't it be
resolved? After all, we were giving power to neighbouring countries.
It is because some people are major importers of generators and are
making more money; so why should there be regular power supply? It
is the truth. It is not about trivializing the matter. If the
government sincerely wants the refineries turned around, they will.
It is because they are making money, and I tell you, it is a
continuous process. After this government, another one comes around
and so it will continue.
On her interest in politics come
2011
Much as I will want to always
contribute my quota to the development of the society, I am not
desperate about being in power. I believe that wherever I find
myself, I can contribute my quota to nation building. For now, we
are still trying to strengthen the internal democracies of the
various political parties. I am not totally ruling out the
possibility of joining the political race come 2011, but I just want
to let you know that I am not desperate. Thousands of people from my
area have appealed to me to contest; but we are still watching.
In 2011, my interest is to ensure
that Governor Rotimi Amaechi returns for a second tenure and if
possible, if there is any reason for any higher political office, we
still stand by him. That is my only interest for now.
Advice
The ruling class should be
passionate about creating a decent, comfortable, viable and strong
nation. They must begin to re-order their value system. They must
leave enduring legacies. Thank God for Governor Amaechi. He is God's
special blessing to Rivers people. For the masses we should realize
that rights go with responsibilities. All hands must be on deck.

RSHA Passes
Vote Of Confidence On Amaechi
By Joe Kalu
The Rivers State House of Assembly
has passed a vote of confidence on Governor Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi
and his Executive Council for his achievements in the last two
years.
This is sequel to a motion on the
matter of urgent importance moved on the floor of the House by the
leader, Hon. Chidi Lloyd and seconded by his deputy Hon. Hope
Ikiriko.
The motion came during an
interactive session last week between the Executives and the
Legislative arm as part of activities to celebrate Amaechi's second
year in office.
The lawmakers lauded the Governor
on his developmental strides, particularly in the area of security,
education and health amongst others.
Following the motion, the Speaker
Rt. Hon. Tonye Harry divided the House and members voted unanimously
in support of the motion.
He lauded the Governor for his
doggedness in the fight against corruption in the state and assured
him of the cooperation of the legislature, to achieve set goals.
Speaking earlier, Governor Chibuike
Amaechi reiterated the administration's intention to develop the
water fronts and to protect lives and property in the state.
The Governor who promised
that the state will witness rapid transformation during his tenure
sued for the support of the people to enable him achieve set
objectives. He also used the opportunity to list out some of his
achievements so far.
Meanwhile, a bill seeking the
provision of social amenities for children in the state-CHILD RIGHT
BILL has received its first reading on the floor of the state House
of Assembly.
Presenting the bill on the floor of
the House, the leader, Chidi Lloyd said the passage of the bill will
enable the less privileged children benefit from social amenities
lamenting that the state has not benefited from donor-agencies such
as UNICEF because of the absence of Child Right Law and hence asked
for support from members.
The Child Right Act passed by the
National Assembly you would recall is expected to be domesticated by
all states of the federation but as at present only 16 out of the 36
states of the federation have complied.
In a related development, the Bill
transmuting the College of Education (COE) into University of
Education (UOE) passed a fortnight by the RSHA has been signed into
law by the state Chief Executive as part of his 2nd year anniversary
celebration.
This singular action of Governor
Amaechi sent the university community into frenzy, and they
subsequently went on a street rally to demonstrate their
appreciation to the Governor, Dame Maureen Tamuno, the House
Committee Chairman on Education and indeed all those who made their
dream a reality.
One of the lecturers enthused, “we
have today been rescued from the 16 year slavery of the university
of Ibadan where the college was affiliated to by our action
governor”. He prayed God to always protect and guide him.
Committee
Joins In Congratulating Amaechi
By Okechukwu Geoffrey
The Rivers State Interministrial
Intervention Committee on the Deflooding of Port Harcourt Metropolis
has joined other well meaning citizens of the state to congratulate
the Governor of Rivers State Rt. Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi for
his monumental two years in office.
Speaking to our correspondent in
Port Harcourt over the weekend the Chairman Hon. Godstime Orlukwu
described the Governor as one sent by God to take Rivers State to
the next level stressing that what the governor has been able to put
in place in just two years of his administration is enough to
convince any Rivers person that governor Amaechi did not just come
to transform the state but to set the pace in the governance of the
'Richest' state in the Delta region.
Orlukwu who spoke on behalf of the
committee commended the governor for demystifying governance in the
state pointing out that the people are glad for having a governor
who goes by himself to inspect ongoing projects.
Describing the governor as one who
means well for the people, he lauded him for impacting positively on
the lives of the people while thanking him for repositioning the
education, health and power sectors.
Hon. Orlukwu particularly hailed
the state Chief Executive for embarking on numerous road
constructions in all the nooks and corners of the state and said
that the state under Governor Amaechi has recorded tremendous
success as the people can now be proud to call themselves Rivers
people.
He maintained that the only way to
move the state much more forward was to support the governor and
called on those who are still looking for one way or the other to
run the present administration down to make a change of heart and
join the governor to make Rivers State the envy of other states in
the country and the world at large.
The committee also thanked all the
cabinet members for helping the governor to transform the state and
commended the governor and his team for deeming the establishment of
the deflooding committee necessary pointing out that since the
committee came on board residents of the city have been restrained
from littering the drains.
The committee which assured the
governor of their support by ensuring that the drains are kept clean
however appealed to residents to always make cleanliness their
watchword warning that the committee is not going back in its task
of dealing with anyone caught messing up/building on the drains.
Orlukwu who also is the chairman of
the Rivers Success Movement however used the opportunity to
congratulate the governor for doing well.
He has on behalf of the group
charged him to continue to deliver the dividends of democracy to the
people, wishing him well.
Airport Landlord Hails Amaechi's Two Years In Office
By Okechukwu Geoffrey
The Omagwa landlords Association
Chairman, Comrade Godwin Izoma Chijioke has described the governor's
two years in office as monumental and full of achievements.
The Chairman who stated this while
speaking to our correspondence at his residence in Omagwa said
Governor Amaechi's two years in office was like a governor who has
served for twelve years pointing out that governor Rotimi Chibuike
Amaechi has made the Ikwerre ethnic nationality proud.
According to him, the governor has
impacted positively in virtually all the sectors of the economy, be
it education, health, electricity and roads among others and said
that the governor has given Rivers State another facelift going by
the numerous projects embarked upon by his government under two
years in office describing the governor's style of leadership as a
welcome development.
Comrade Izoma who said that the
governor has impressed him so much especially in the aviation sector
commended him for bringing the International Airport Omagwa back on
stream saying that the airport is booming with several projects
going on at the airport.
In Ikwerre local government and
Omagwa town in particular he commended the governor for touching
lives especially the building of new model primary schools and
appealed to the governor to remember Omagwa healthwise as the health
project currently going on in the state has not reached them.
The landlord Chairman who said he
was confident that the governor in no distant future would address
certain issues bothering the people also reminded the number one
citizen of the state to consider the host communities in the awards
of contract now that government is thinking of fencing the airport
as he equally appealed to government to consider the people for
employment whenever the need arises.
Comrade Izoma also called on the
governor to provide another alternative means of transport to and
fro the airport junction and maintained that the ban on okada was
seriously affecting both visitors and the landlords.
He particularly called on Lufthanza
airline which is to commence operation soon to consider the host
communities for employment.
And called on the youths of Ikwerre
and the state in general to give the Amaechi-led administration the
needed support while praying God to continue to guide and sustain
the governor in his quest to provide democracy dividends to all the
nooks and crannies of the state as he assured him of the support of
Omagwa people.
Tourism Fair
Designed To Achieve Peace
By Joe Kalu
The forthcoming First Niger Delta
Tourism and Cultural Fair Exhibition billed to take place from
13th-20th November, 2009 in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State Capital
is said to be designed to provide a platform required to achieve a
lasting peace in the region.
The project coordinator, Dr.
Kenneth Kalu made this disclosure recently in a press briefing
shortly before embarking on a sensitization road show organized by
the Central Planning Committee, CPC of the programme.
He disclosed further that the event
will not only erase the negative perception about the Niger Delta
region but would provide an opportunity to showcase the beauty and
natural endowment of the region as well as job opportunity.
The project coordinator who
expressed optimism in the ability of the project to revive the fast
dwindling custom, cultural and tradition of the region disclosed
that the event is divided into seven segments to feature Tourism
Exhibition, Food Festival, Cultural Cannival and Orientation days.
Dr. Kalu disclosed further that it
will also feature a “Mr. and a Miss. Niger Delta Cultural Pageant,
an innovation he said was intended to de-westernize beauty pageants
and at the same time add local flavour as, according to him
contestants will among other things be required to fluently speak
their local languages as well as to exhibit their culture through
dressing.
The coordinator also stated that
the programme has been designed to integrate the youths especially
the repentant militants who will be given a one day orientation
talks in course of the event.
The CPC used the opportunity to
express gratitude to all the governors of the Niger Delta States and
in particular Governor Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi of Rivers State for
not only supporting the vision but accepting to host this year's
event and his Akwa-Ibom State counterpart, Chief Godswill Akpabio
for sponsoring the food festival and fashion show aspect of the
programme.

Mbiama:Hawkers Sell
Fake Bottled Water
By Okechukwu Geoffrey
Travelers along Port Harcourt/Mbiama/Yenegoa
expressway have been advised to check very well the type of bottled
water they buy from hawkers along that route as it is now clear that
some of the bottled water have turned out to be fake.
Narrating their ordeal to our
correspondent over the weekend some persons who were traveling from
Port Harcourt to Ogbia in Bayelsa State for a burial said when the
bus that was conveying them got to Mbiama, headquarters of Ahoada
West Local Government Area of Rivers State, they pleaded with the
driver to slow down so that they could buy water to drink because
they were thirsty.
According to them, when the
desperate hawkers in their usual “hurry-hurry” style sold the water
to them, they finally discovered that all the bottled water that
was sold to them were not properly sealed.
And because the development did not
go down well with them, they said, they contacted some policemen
around the area to handle the matter and probably arrest the hawkers
but was surprised that the policemen rather than deal with the
hawkers chose to defend them by saying it was not their fault and
concluded they must pay for the water.
They told our reporter that one of
the policemen even said it was not the first time the hawkers have
sold such waters to travelers along that road as if it was an
arrangement or business between them and the hawkers.
The people who said they had no
option than to pay for the water since the police could not do
anything on the matter said they abandoned the bottled waters with
the policemen in the process.
In the meantime, some of them have
threatened to visit the cocoa cola office in Port Harcourt to table
the matter and possibly find out if they are no longer sealing their
bottle waters.
However, the people are therefore
advising travelers along Mbiama/Yenegoa Road to be conscious of the
type of bottled water they buy from hawkers in that area.
Amaechi Determined To Improve Welfare ~ Hon Nwokocha
By Joe Kalu
The Rivers State Government under
the able leadership of Rt. Hon. Chibuike Amaechi has reassured
Rivers people of its preparedness to improve their welfare. It has
promised that all parts of the state with challenges of power will
become a thing of the past very soon.
Hon. Commissioner for Power, Mr.
Augustine Nwokocha gave the reassurance over the weekend at Oyigbo
as a special guest of honour during this year's Oyigbo New Yam
Festival (Iriji-ama).
According to him “all the
communities in the state have been programmed for electrification by
government.
Those who already have light but
have problem of poles, transformers or cables will be taken care of,
as government is determined to improve the peoples' welfare”.
On the new yam cultural festival
the Commissioner commended the Council Chairman, Hon (Sir) Precious
Oforji for its revival regretting that it was only in this part of
the world that people don't relish thier cultural heritage.
“People without culture are like
those without root and people without root don't have destination
but are only wanderers”.
He expressed gratitude that Oyigbo
people have woken up from their slumber, advising them not to allow
it slip off their hands again, assuring them of the state's
government support at all times.
In his speech the Oyigbo Local
Government Council Chairman Hon, (Sir) Precious Oforji assured of
his administration's preparedness to restore all the cultural
heritage and values the Oyigbo people were known for in the past,
blaming their backwardness to the ineptitude of their past leaders.
In his keynote address, Rt. Hon.
Chief O.C Ememe said Niger Delta region is the best thing that has
happened to Nigeria and assured that his people of Ogwe Asa
Community in the neighbouring Abia State are part and parcel of
Oyigbo which they are proud of.
“Oyigbo is destined to be great. It
is the window of all Asa people in the country and nobody can detach
us from Oyigbo our root” he stated.
The Ogwe traditional ruler however
regretted that the sharing of their gains which they collectively
fought for is now the problem just as in the case of robbers who
fight over their loot after a successful operation. He advised for
the closing of ranks from all stakeholders in the overall interest
of the area as peace is the bedrock of any development.
Also speaking, the Tai Local
Government Council Chairman, Hon (Chief) Barry Mpigi was full of
praises for his colleague in Oyigbo LGA, Prince Precious Oforji for
what he called his wonderful performance since assumption of office.
He made it known that development
might not only be physical infrastructure but anything that has to
improve the welfare or add value and glory to the people, adding
that the people of Tai are proud of Oforji's developmental strides.
In his welcome address earlier, the
Chairman “Ogbako Amala Oyigbo”, Mr. Louis Nwachukwu had explained
that the new yam festival was an event which symbolizes the arrival
and consumption of new yam in the culture and tradition of Oyigbo
people.
He however regretted that most
communities in Nigeria are now gradually shading the practice that
brought about centuries-long festival which the Chairman attributed
to Christianity and Islam influences, misrepresentation of the event
as a pagan practice as well as the impact of rapid urbanization.
Mr. Nwachukwu used the opportunity
to appeal to the state government for at least 10 additional 300KVA
transformers as well as to assist in connecting Oyigbo to the
national grid to boost electricity supply in the area.
The Chairman also appealed for the
consideration of their distinguished sons and daughters into
positions of trust, “the people of Oyigbo ars made up of Ndoki and
Asa ethnic nationality. We have not benefited from any state
appointment, state or federal employment and we appeal to our dear
Governor, to help redress this disturbing imbalance, he said.
Highlights of the occasion was the
joint cutting of the roasted yam by members of the high table led by
the Honourable Commissioner for Power, Mr. Austine Nwokocha to the
delight and admiration of the crowed.
There were cultural performances by
many groups, which include Nwada Boys of Oyigbo, Umuada of Oyigbo,
K.B.K Cultural Group of Rebisi, Nneji of Owaza, Abia State and the
famous Ohafia War Dance, Abia State.
Oyigbo CDC Chairman, Hon Acho
Elechi, Oyigbo Youth Association President, Chiemela Victor Oforji,
National Youth Council of Nigeria Oyigbo Chapter Chairman Comrade
Felix Nwogu, Chairperson, Ogbako Amala Women's Wing Lolo Chinyere E.
Okorie, Ofor holder (Ojiofoala) Oyigbo, Hon I.S. Nwafor, Chief Mike
M. Paul, Oji Ugoi I of Asa and Chief Edwin Kekeocha, Dike Eji Ogamba
I of Oyigbo, Ehime Mbano and Umuihe Autonomous Community of Imo
State all commended the elders, stakeholders of Oyigbo and
importantly the council boss for encouraging and supporting the
venture. They all used the opportunity of random sampling to pledge
their unalloyed loyalty and cooperation to the council
administration.
The celebration was preceded by the
visit of the Governor's Local Government Council Inspection Team led
by the sole Administrator of the Greater Port Harcourt city, Dame
Aleruchi Cookey-Gam.
Executed/on going projects
inspected by the team included the 128 rooms secretariat complex,
construction of 12 lavatories at the old secretariat, 320 lock up
and 200 open stalls at the Kom-Kom market under construction, G.S.S
Oyigbo water project, Cottage Hospital which is now to be known as
Comprehensive Health Centre to accommodate more interest and
construction of schools, roads, Achina Road, Muumy “B” road and
Jesilor Road.
Mrs. Janet Okere Sister-in-Charge
of the Comprehensive Health Centre, Oyigbo used the opportunity of
the visit to thank the council Chairman, Hon, precious Oforji for
what he has been doing for them but however appealed for the
equiping of the health centre and boosting of their allowances as
well as staff to enable them cope with the upsurge in patient
attendance. The team commended the council boss for his
developmental strides and determination to transform his people.
They however, requested for the
detailed income and expenditure account of the council from the
inception of his administration to be forwarded to their office.
RPN Congratulates
Ikanya - By Joe Kalu
The Republican Party of Nigeria RPN,
Akuku-Toru Local Government Council branch has felicitated with
their leader and Honourable Commissioner for Special Duties Chief
Davies Ibiamu Ikanya on his recent re-appointment into the state
Executive Council.
Speaking in the council
headquarters with journalists, the RPN Chairman in the area Hon. Alu
Williams said the reappointment of their leader signifies many
things to their party, the opposition parties, the unity government
and indeed Rivers State politics.
They advised Commissioner to use
this opportunity well by not only consolidating on his achievement
in the first tenure but to also look inwards to empower his
supporters who he noted have suffered a lot in course of propagating
his course in the midst of a PDP dominated area.
The RPN Chairman explained that
there was nothing wrong with one patronizing his people but that it
should be understood that his political supporters cut across the
LGAs and beyond and are anxiously waiting to be empowered through
different ways.
“It could be employment, provision
of soft rotating loans, capacity building, supply or contract
executions” he noted.
The Chairman further advised the
honourable commissioner to always maintain his own identity as an
RPN leader as he also leads the Forum Of Opposition Parties, FOOP.
He also used the opportunity to
congratulate the State Governor Rt. Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi for
making a success of his two years in office.
He did not forget to mention all
his developmental strides in the state. Hon. Williams however
advised him to tread softly in the case of the controversial
waterfronts demolition.
“In as much as the Governor's
intention might be right, he should show human face in the whole
exercise.
The residents of the area have to
be properly relocated while they should be assured of coming back
there as they are natural coastal-oriented people”, he concluded.

Nigeria At 49 And Rivers State After Two Years Under Amaechi
From Apostle Eugene Ogu
Nigerias democratic journey can be likened to that of the
Israelites to the promised land. A journey that was destined for 40
days but stretched and protracted to years.
What was responsible for the turn
out of events in their circumstances was strictly due to their
unbelief and doubt in the Almighty God. In this, the inability of
the Israel leadership to lead by the divine principles and the
directives of the Almighty God took its toll on them. For instance,
Moses at a juncture was instructed by God to speak to the stone but
instead, he struck it. Again, he was asked by God to march into the
land and take possession but he rather chose to send spies on the
land instead of believing God and having faith in God. Of course,
this resulted into negative report brought by the spies that the
people who inhabit the land were giants while they (Israelites) were
like midgets to them. The consequence of this action gave vent to
the discouragement and despondency among the Israelites that ended
up slowing down the journey.
As for Nigeria, leadership has
always been our problem. We have leadership that knows best how to
enthrone, perpetuate, promote and condone corruption which remains
the sin of Nigeria. The Bible poignantly says that sin is a reproach
to any nation.
Nigeria, painfully has over the years produced a leadership that
only make use of their mouth and not their eyes, their nose and not
their ears. If our leaders have ears, they will hear the cry of the
masses and know that the masses are yawning for electoral reforms,
standardization of our tertiary institutions, upgrading of minimum
wages for all and provision of electricity. If they have eyes, they
will see the terrible and deplorable nature of our roads in the
country. Examples abound in this: Shagamu-Benin Road which for
decades have killed many souls and right now has become a death trap
waiting to catch both travelers and drivers due to its myriads of
craters and gullies will always beckon for attention. Warri-Port
Harcourt Road, Port Harcourt-Enugu, and Kogi-Enugu Road respectively
have all turned embarrassing sites and killers of sorts sending
innocent travelers to either the hospitals or the morgues due to
their ability to induce and cause accidents. These roads
significantly and by implication tell stories of the rot that has
become the leadership of the largest black nation in the world.
Again, if they have nose to smell
they would have been sensitive to the agitations in the country like
the Association of Staff Unions of Nigeria Universities (ASUU) or
the Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT) and of course, would have known
what to do. ASUU's recent strike no doubt has disrupted the academic
programmes of almost all universities in Nigeria as it will equally
unsettle both parents and students financially.
NASU (Non Academic Staff Union Of
Universities) appears set to go the same way as ASUU if things do
not get ahead. The insensitivity of our leaders has made getting
them do what they should be compelled to do only through a fight.
The way and manner the banking
reforms had come and is going has led to untold hardships that the
economy has run into serious difficulty by the reason of their
insensibility. Almost every foreign LC (Letter of Credit) cannot be
honoured consequent upon the actions of the Central Bank of Nigeria
Governor. His rash actions rather than edify ended up sirring up
more bottlenecks thus squeezing out the salvation it was supposed to
bring.
The embarrassment that the Attorney
General and Minister of (in)Justice Michael Aandoakaa and Farida
Waziri, Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crime Commission (EFCC)
spewed out over the Ibori saga is another proof of insensitivity
running in the sinews and tissues of Nigeria leaders.
Considering the sensitive position
this two people occupy in the country, both coming out to the media,
one declaring Ibori free and innocent, the other saying something to
the contrary and by that bringing Nigeria to the altar of public
ridicule before the international community and yet, nothing was
done about it speaks volumes. By this, one clearly sees that our
leaders are truly the problem of the country.
However, coming to Rivers State,
this also have been revealed in the two years Governor Amaechi has
spent in the Brick House and by the demonstration of the political
will within this time has brought revolution in both project
implementation and development in every nook and cranny of the
state, not just Port Harcourt the state capital.
Amaechi's commitment and dedication
in the delivery of democratic dividends is made manifest not only in
the executions of projects but in the quality and standard of the
projects that are being done.
The revolution can be seen in the
education sector with 250 primary schools under construction and
nearing completion at different stages. In the health sector and
following the same approach are 150 health centres under
construction. There are not less than 100 road construction
projects going on at different stages, some almost completed and
the rest save for the rains possibly would have been completed.
Old or abandoned projects inherited
from earlier administrations are equally getting attention. His
physical involvement in monitoring and supervision of projects, his
openness and prudent approach to issues, his transparency and
accountability to incomes and expenditure, being abreast of every
stage of any project and painstakingly being able to give detailed
analysis and information regarding the numerous projects remains a
clear indication of a leader that the present day Nigeria requires.
At two years, what we have seen is
a clear signal that the end of his administration will welcome a
transformed Rivers State should all the commissioners and Chairmen
in the state catch up with his passion, vision, and doggedness and
operate in the same commitment in their various ministries like some
have shown then, Rivers State can be sure that the expected or lost
Garden City we desire to see is on board a jet plane ready to land.
My desire as a principal
stakeholder to the regime becomes apt at this point in time. I would
admonish that all the contractors who are participating in this
revolution should not just consider themselves as people doing jobs
to get money rather, let them see themselves as stakeholders and
co-partners with the government in the transformation of the state
and therefore see reasons why they must device means of working in
the night so that in the morning people could have the day for their
business. Again, they should not just condemn a road completely but
make some lanes accessible. A situation where a road like Mgbuoba
was completely dismantled and rendered unusable is not beneficiary
to the economy.
While we congratulate the governor
for restoring security which has resulted in the restoration of
night life in Port Harcourt and Rivers State in general, contractors
should seize that as an opportunity to work in the night like some
advanced countries where people sleep and wake up to see that some
substantial part of the road been done.
As I comment and appreciate the
feat achieved at this point, I must make it clear that to whom much
is given much is expected. The governor and government of Rivers
State must not relent on their efforts to pursue with vigour as
though they are starting those dreams and visions that drive them
into action until they are accomplished as it is said that it is not
over until it is over. And like the story of the clock which says
tick, says the clock tick-tick, what you have to do, do quick. My
prayers is and will always be with you, Governor Rotimi Chibuike
Amaechi.
Meanwhile, a big congratulations to
the residents of Rivers State whose patience and understanding
during this time of transformations of the state must be commended.
As we all know that a pregnant woman at the point of delivery is
associated and, experiences all manner of pains especially at the
hour of delivery. Though in pain, she appreciates and desires what
she is to deliver, she bears the pain because of the importance and
value of the child. But after delivery, she celebrates the child she
has delivered and quickly forgets the pains she had borne while in
labour.
Hence, by the time all the on-going
projects are completed and commissioned for us, we shall all
celebrate and forget the pains of and days of its delivery.
Congratulations to you the reader
and all those resident in Rivers State for being part of this
revolution.

UNIPORT Chief Security Officer Murdered... Campus In Disarray
By Wilson Uchendu
Beam Checks has confirmed that the
Chief Security officer (CSO) of the University of Port Harcourt was
murdered around 7:46 pm at the Delta Campus of the University while
watching the FIFA U-17 World Cup Tournament on Saturday by a
gruesome group of yet-to-be identified gunmen.
The University spokesman, Dr.
Williams Wodi while confirming the dastardly act hinted that the
trigger-happy men of the underworld in a rare display of bravado had
earlier called a professor of Linguistics of the University, Ndimelu
and his wife to intimate them of their devilish intention to take
the professor's life. It was gathered that the CSO had gone to visit
Prof. Ndimelu where he met his killers. It was further revealed that
the assassins were actually after the professor's life but when they
could not get the Professor, they resorted to heavy shooting which
later claimed the life of the CSO who according to reports from some
quarters had personally led his men to the scene of the onslaught so
as to arrest the situation.
While the 'war' was still raging
in his home, Prof. Ndimelu was said to be entangled in a gridlock
somewhere along Choba-Rumuokoro Road.
Beam Checks gathered that the
assassins who locked the Professors wife and children inside one of
the rooms in the house started shooting sporadically when they
discovered that the Professor was no where be found. That was where
to the CSO who perhaps had gone on a rescue mission met his
waterloo. The gunmen did not remove anything from the don's home.
The late CSO’s body has since been deposited at the University's
mortuary.
This publication learnt that the
University has been thrown in disarray over the incident while a
lecturer in the Department of Chemistry who pleaded anonymity
disclosed that the University's authorities met yesterday to discuss
on the issue and security of the institution in general.
The Rivers State Police Command has
confirmed the killing. The Police Relations Officer (PPRO) of the
Command, Rita Inoma-Abbey revealed that several arms and ammunition
such as AK 47 rifle were seen at the side of the late CSO. As at
press time, no arrest has been made by the police but investigations
are on to unravel those behind the killing.
UBE Chairman
Embarks On Inspection Of Schools
By Okechukwu Geoffrey
Chairman of the Rivers State
Universal Basic Education Board, Sir Alli Oruitemeke has embarked on
an inspection tour of some schools within the Port Harcourt
metropolis to ascertain the responses of both the teachers/children
to classes and the state of things in the schools.
The Chairman who decried dirty
environment in some of the schools visited however called on the
teachers to henceforth inculcate the culture of cleanliness in
children pointing out that during their days cleanliness and
discipline were held in high esteem.
He used the medium to inform the
head teachers/head mistress that the board would from time to time
visit the schools to know what the schools are doing with the
instructional materials given to them by government.
Sir Oruitemeke also appealed to
parents to send their children back to school as lessons has resumed
in earnest and assured the teachers that government was doing
everything possible to create a conducive environment for learning
while calling on the children to be serious with their studies
describing the exercise as a continuous one. The UBE boss said the
board would no longer condone dirty environment and any act of
indiscipline amongst the schools. He advised schools that have not
collected their instructional materials to come to the board and
collect them.
The Chairman also used the
opportunity to call on all principals of junior secondary schools
and head teachers of public primary schools who have not collected
their instructional materials to come to the board for the
collection immediately.
The Chairman who was accompanied on
the visit by three permanent board members of the board however
visited model Primary Schools I and II Orominike, Orogbum Model
Primary Schools I and II, Junior Secondary School Orominike and
Junior Secondary, Orogbum.
Meanwhile, the UBE Chairman has
called on the chief supervisors to ensure equitable distribution of
instructional materials to all the schools warning that the board
will descend heavily on them should their be any further complain of
non-receipt of materials by school.
Sir Oruitemeke who gave the order
last week Friday during a meeting he held with the chief supervisors
at the board's conference room regretted that over one month now
that he flagged-off the distribution of the instructional materials
some schools have not come to collect the materials.
He maintained that the visit to
some of the schools revealed that only few schools have collected
and expressed sadness that teachers have become the end users of the
materials pointing out that the board will not hesitate to deal with
any school that have refused to distribute the materials to
students.
He reminded them that the present
board attaches great importance to transparency and accountability
and advised that the materials in their possession be put to proper
use as the schools will be made to account for whatever they have
received.
Contributing the board member I,
Hon Lucky Ugochukwu Worluh appealed to the chief supervisors to
support the present board achieve its laudable dreams especially now
that the State Governor Chibuike Amaechi is doing a lot to transform
the education sector adding that the Alli Oruitemeke led board is
hinged on transforming the schools and urged the schools to use the
materials well.
Also speaking, the NUT Chairman in
the state Comrade Moses Adiela (JP) commended the chief supervisors
and teachers for maintaining a cordial relationship with the board
and the state government and urged them to put more effort
considering the plans of the governor to reposition the education
sector.
Comrade Adiela also assured
teachers in the state that the Governor has agreed to give to them
all that is due to them enjoining them to work hard.
NULGE Boss Deserves Every Encouragement ~ Opubo Briggs
By Joe Kalu
The Rivers State President of the
Nigeria Union of Local Government Employee (NULGE) and National Vice
President South-South Apostle Godwin Tumini Diri has been described
as a visionary leader that deserves every encouragement to exhibit
more of his potentials.
The Branch Chairman of NULGE Akuku-Toru
Local Government Council Chapter, Comrade Opubo S.D. Briggs (JP)
made the disclosure over the weekend at Abonnema in a chat with
newsmen.
“According to the union leader “it
is not easy to find such a selfless leader who is determined to
leave a worthy legacy for posterity”. He cited the 3-story edifice
NULGE-Consulate Secretariat to back up his stand point, adding that
Apostle Diri could as well have just rented two bedroom flats for
the Union Secretariat while the surplus money will be embezzled.
Comrade Briggs used the opportunity
to condemn Mr. C.J.T Ajie for according to him fighting his master
that made him what he is, which brought about the unnecessary crisis
to the otherwise peaceful union, under the leadership of Diri.
The AKULGA Union Chairman made it
known that the popularity of their union today over and above the
mother union the Nigeria Labour Congress NLC is attributed to the
charismatic and visionary leadership of Diri.
He however expressed happiness that
it was all over, appealing to everybody to close ranks and work in
the interest of the union.
On Governor Amaechi's two years
anniversary the union leader said it is worthy of celebration. “The
Chief Executive Rt. Hon. Chibuike Amaechi is a focused leader who is
in a hurry to transform the state”, he said.
He however advised the Governor to
always weigh his decisions and policies against the interest of the
people before implementing Comrade Briggs while not supporting those
who think that the demolition exercise of the administration in
pursuance of its Urban renewal programme is an Ikwerre agenda or has
ethnic connotation, he all the same advised the Governor to be
detribalized and avoid being defocused in his determined effort to
transform the state.
On the controversial waterfront
demolition, the union leader said their was nothing wrong with the
exercise but advised that it should have human face.
“I think it would be advisable of
the government to enumerate and get the actual owners and size of
their property, apart from the compensation being paid the settlers
government should develop the place fast and allow the residents
take possession of the place again perhaps under some owner/occupier
kind of arrangements since the people are mostly coastal dwellers
with the main occupation as fishing.
Comrade Briggs used the opportunity
to commend the council boss, Hon Paul Awoyesuku for the able way he
has been piloting its affairs especially for the prompt and regular
payment of staff salaries and once again reiterated their unalloyed
support to the administration stressing their importance as the
third tier of government which employs greater percentage of the
grassroot people.
The union also used the opportunity
to commend President Umaru Musa Yar'Adua for granting of amnesty to
militants advising that the gains should be consolidated.
Conversely, the NULGE, Degema Local
Government Council branch has given a 14-day ultimatum to the
council Chairman, Hon Abiye Davies to consider paying their
accumulated salaries and allowances arrears running into millions of
naira or face unpleasant consequences.
According to the branch NULGE
Chairman, Comrade June Bell Fiddo in a chat with newsmen over the
weekend said the workers have exhausted their patience and so are
ready with a show down with him.
He disclosed that the worst aspect
of their problem is that the Council Executive now avoid the council
headquarters like a plague.
“Degema as one of the oldest Local
Government Areas in Rivers State has nothing to show for it, no
roads, no electricity, no offices and no drinking water”, he said.
He lamented that the Council
Chairman was imposed on the people without their consent or choice,
adding that it was actually the reasons those who knew him
vehemently opposed his candidature and prayed God to deliver them
before they are all dead from the hands of wicked stakeholders whom
he said do not have the interest of the people at heart.
Comrade Fiddo however used the
opportunity to congratulate Governor Amaechi for a successful two
years anniversary and purposeful leadership and appealed to him to
call the council Chairman to order in the interest of the people.
